Our Capabilities

Overview

Although radiological sources can greatly benefit us, they can also pose a great threat if they fall into the wrong hands.  When a radiological security incident occurs, prompt action by well-trained and properly equipped responders is essential for a successful outcome. While site physical protection systems provide a critical role (notifications, detection, delay, etc.) during a theft or sabotage incident, sites often do not have the training or equipment to take immediate effective action to interrupt and neutralize an adversary. This also applies to the screening of people and conveyances at hasty vehicle checkpoints by border security or other law enforcement personnel.

Fortress Your Future: Cybersecurity Reimagined

The radiological security sector is responsible for managing highly sensitive materials, equipment, and data that, if compromised, could have severe consequences for public safety and national security. As more radiological devices and control systems become network accessible, the potential for cyberattacks targeting these critical assets grows, with threats ranging from sabotage of equipment to the theft of sensitive information related to radioactive materials.

Our services begin with detailed risk assessments of both IT and operational technology (OT) systems, focusing on vulnerabilities in critical systems such as radiological monitoring devices, control systems, and data storage networks. We offer vulnerability management and scanning services to identify and mitigate threats before they can impact operational safety.

Adhering to industry regulations and standards, such as those set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), we help radiological facilities maintain compliance while securing their critical infrastructures. We offer cybersecurity advisory and managed services to prevent unauthorized access and potential tampering with radiological systems.

By creating tailored cybersecurity programs that empower organizations to safeguard their assets, we enable radiological facilities to maintain operational integrity and safety. Our focus on proactive risk management helps organizations in this sector stay resilient against emerging threats while ensuring regulatory adherence and public protection.

Plan and Prepare

S3 helps private sector organizations such as hospitals, industrial users, law enforcement, and related agencies by providing:

  • Consulting services on the physical safeguarding of radiological sources from theft, sabotage, or loss of regulatory control
  • Reviewing your current physical and cybersecurity systems
  • Threat and vulnerability assessments to enable informed, risk-based decision making on security upgrades
  • Helping government and law enforcement agencies to plan and prepare to conduct a response to an incident involving a radiological source

Train

  • Provide tactical training in screening people and vehicles at hasty vehicle checkpoints or other border security-related control points involving the smuggling of a radiological source
